“Rabbi Tarfon and the elders were once reclining in the upper story of Nithza’s house in Lydda, when this question was raised before them: Is study greater, or practice?

Rabbi Tarfon answered saying: Practice is greater. Rabbi Akiva answered saying: Study is greater, for it leads to practice. Then they all answered and said: Study is greater because it leads to action” (Babylonian Talmud: Tractate Kiddushin 40b).

Is study greater, or practice? Ultimately, the answer may not matter. We study for the purpose of maintaining a Jewish way of life. For this reason, lifelong Jewish learning is a mitzvah and we at TBI are proud to offer a myriad of learning opportunities to suit the individual learner.

Hebrew Classes

We offer a range of Hebrew classes, from beginner to advanced. Our program is designed for English-speaking adults who primarily encounter the Hebrew language through Jewish religious life–the prayers and Torah readings in the synagogue, the blessings and rituals of Jewish home observances, and words or phrases arising out of a Jewish cultural context.

Geirut Program

Our Geirut (conversion) Program is a unique learning program that has been crafted by the Rabbis of Temple Beth Israel to support individuals and families interested in deepening their knowledge and experience of Judaism.

Rosh Chodesh Women’s Group

Each month the women of our congregation are invited to come together and rejoice in the new month with sacred learning and in-depth conversation over coffee and a nosh.

All Rosh Chodesh events are held in private homes. Please contact the TBI office for more details.

Torah Study

Our weekly study group, led by TBI rabbis.
